Why is it important?

Cravings for sugar during pregnancy can increase the incidence of caries. Children born of mothers with caries are said to develop dental caries early in life. this study also shows a possible role for Candida in establishing the cariogenic biofilm.

Perspectives

By being educated in the importance of oral health, mothers will not only reduce this risk but also reduce the risk of preterm delivery due to other chronic oral infections such as gingivitis.
