What is it about?

Intensive care unit patients with infective endocarditis had the highest heparin-binding protein (HBP) serum levels, whereas the patients with bacterial meningitis had the lowest serum levels of cortisol. In addition, elevated serum levels of cortisol and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 correlated positively with the severe course of sepsis.

Why is it important?

The results are supporting the notion that pathophysiology of sepsis is significantly influenced by the site of infection.

Perspectives

To sum up the data was not easy because of the complexity of sepsis induced inflammatory responses.
