What is it about?
Lack of physical activity can cause diseases such as diabetes, cancers and heart problems. In Tanzania, levels of physical activity are rapidly decreasing especially in urban areas. In this project, we measured physical activity levels among rural and urban Tanzanians. We also assessed social and economic factors that may influence physical activity levels. Our findings show that levels of physical activity are still very high, especially so in rural Tanzania. Living in urban setting, being educated and having an employment were the reasons for relatively low levels of physical activity. participating in active commuting (walking and cycling) and engaging in works that involve vigorous physical activity were the main reasons for higher physical activity levels in rural when compared to urban areas.

Why is it important?
Decreasing levels of physical activity are related to the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases in Tanzania. Monitoring the trends is therefore crucial in the control of non communicable diseases.
