There are scarce research on skeletal effects of elevated thyroid hormones in Sub-saharan Africa due to limited access to expensive bone biomarkers and DXA. Our study found a high burden of bone loss 45%(osteoporosis) among participants with uncontrolled hyperthyroidism in Nigeria, evidenced by elevated bone markers denoting increase bone turnover; and reduced Bone mineral density by DXA measurement..

Why is it important?

Hyperthyroidism is second commonest endocrine disorder in Nigeria . A known risk factor for osteoporosis and fractures. It is therefore of importance to emphasized early diagnosis and prompt management to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated bone loss.

Perspectives

First study in Nogeria to bring into limelight the burden of hyperthyroid bone disease which has arose the consciousness of the physicians to screen and manage bone loss accordingly.
