What is it about?

This is a pilot study conducted to determine the effect size of an OT intervention targeted to the Occupational needs of complex patients, in their rehabilitation phase. We include all patients with occupational needs admitted for rehabilitation, regardless of diagnosis. We also determined the feasibility of this intervention in a post acute, hospital-home based rehabilitation setting

Why is it important?

Rehabilitation addresses individual's needs not strictly related to diagnosis. However, most of randomized controlled trial select patients on the basis of their diagnosis. We aimed to implement an individualized OT intervention effective in a broad population of patients admitted for rehabilitation. The individual goals of the program were set by way of the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure.

Perspectives

Experimental OT is feasible in complex patients in a hospital-home-based setting. It ameliorated both patients’ performance and satisfaction in carrying out relevant activities and improved independence in instrumental ADL.
