What is it about?

Red maca, a Peruvian plant, is known to be effective against Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, nonetheless, the mechanism of this is not yet understood and determined. This paper evaluate one alcoholic extract of red maca and two fractions of it to assess if the extract have a unique effect over hormonal receptors and which of the fractions have the beneffitial effect and how.

Why is it important?

We demonstrated that the methanolic extract of red maca favors the expression of Estrogen-Receptors-Beta (ERb) and restores the expression and cell localization of Androgens Receptor (AR) and Estrogens-Receptor-Alpha (ERa). On the other hand, the aqueous fraction of the methanolic extract enhances the expression and cell localization of Androgens receptors and ERa, but only restoring the expression of ERb, while the buthanolic fraction restores the expression of AR and ERa and ERb, thus being this the effective fraction against BPH.

Perspectives

I hope this article help the community to understand how red maca interacts with the body and at a molecular level, giving us the opportunity to understand deeper the progression of this disease and to develop new treatments against it.
