What is it about?

Suctioning is a technique used to remove substances from the nose, mouth, trachea, or pharynx either through the nose or mouth or through artificial tubing. This systematic review aims to update the previous clinical practice guidelines, published in 2001, on suctioning adult patients.

Why is it important?

Our findings showed that while new evidence continues to be varied in strength and lacks in some areas for suctioning, the evidence on suctioning practices has improved since 2001. Our findings are important as many members of the healthcare teams who use the suctioning technique can incorporate this evidence into their practice.
