Community-Driven Mental Health Strategies for U.S. Refugee Resettlement

What is it about?

This study explores the effectiveness of community-based mental health and psychosocial support (CB-MHPSS) programs for refugees and asylum seekers in the U.S. It employs a realist evaluation (RE) approach, focusing on the challenges and strategies for implementing these group interventions in diverse settings. Data was gathered from 11 refugee-serving agencies, involving staff and refugee facilitators who conducted 31 CB-MHPSS intervention groups in 2021. Key findings highlight the need for flexibility in adapting these interventions to meet local needs, especially during challenges like the global pandemic. The balance between maintaining the program's integrity and tailoring it to fit the newcomers' needs was crucial. Insights were gained into overcoming barriers and enhancing program effectiveness, emphasizing the importance of community partnerships and local knowledge. This study provides valuable guidance for effectively supporting the mental health and well-being of refugees and asylum seekers through community-driven approaches.
