This work provides a broad review of the function of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, from the perspective of neuroanatomy and single unit physiology. We review and evaluate three major theories of dACC function, monitoring, regulation, and economic.

Why is it important?
This work provides the first comprehensive review in 15 years of the ACC that includes anatomical and physiological data as a central feature. Thus it provides in one convenient place, a summary of an explosive decade and a half of ACC research.
Perspectives
The neuroimaging and physiology of dACC are often work like ships passing in the night. A major goal of this work is to provide a single resource for neuroimagers, and for other cognitive psychologists and even psychiatrists who are interested in a clear and brief synthesis of this important branch of ACC research.
