What is it about?

We propose a coupling strategy between dance movement and music. We examine the possible ways of mapping harmonic content of movement to direct music generation. Furthermore, we present our findings from a dance performance aiming to understand in what ways our approach is impactful to a professional dancer.

Why is it important?

The novelty in our approach is to find relations between harmony of dance movement and musical structures, this allows us to understand the movement in time and frequency domains. This further allows us to find the connecitons with music, as music can be reppresented in time and frequency. In order to do that, we adopt Mel-frequency cepstrum analysis (MFCC) of movement to map movement to music structures.

Perspectives

I think this study is exciting because our system couples dance movements and music in the domain that both disciplines can be presented in. Which makes performers able to retain their focus on dance movements while generating musical structure in real-time. Furthermore, focusing on this relationship between dance movements and music is fruitful for further development of the system.
