What is it about?

Currently, virtual reality (VR) mostly focuses on what can be seen and heard in a virtual world, and sometimes on what can be touched. Only recently have researchers begun to examine how to add the sense of smell to VR. Our paper categorizes different methods that have been used to include smell in VR, especially in setups that use headsets or special rooms. We discuss the challenges of making smell technology for VR and suggest ideas for the future. We also include a table summarizing the features of the systems that were reviewed.

Why is it important?

The paper presents a classification and extensive review of olfactory virtual reality systems that deployed a Head-mounted Display (HMD) or Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) system, as well as a discussion of the various technological and design challenges.

Perspectives

I hope this paper attracts more interest in the area of olfactory virtual reality, particularly in the areas we identified as needing more attention.
