What is it about?

We developed and evaluated a Game called HistoLab VR. It is a virtual reality application that aims to raise awareness for hazards at workplaces. We implemented a histopathological laboratory as an example workplace. First, we present the design and development process. After development was completed, we conducted a user study with students and experts in the field. We present how playing the game has an impact on the users self-reported anxiety level and that many of the experts recognized the utility of the application in teaching.

Why is it important?

Occupational physicians need a good understanding of potential hazards in a wide variety of workplaces. Visiting these workplaces would be beneficial for increasing their awareness for possible hazards. However, this is time consuming and often impossible due to safety precautions or the lack of resources. Our work shows that it is possible to simulate workplaces to a reasonable degree of realism such that players can explore it and raise their awareness for the implemented hazards.

Perspectives

I find it amazing when technology can support education in meaningful ways. This work is an example of successful integration of a VR application into courses for occupational physicians.
