Let's Make it Accessible: The Challenges Of Working With Low-cost Commercially Available Wearable Devices

What is it about?

This paper discusses some of the challenges that arise when working with wearable devices. Namely the difficulty in accessing raw data recorded by the devices (data accessibility); challenges around using multiple devices that come from different manufacturers which are not compatible with each other (interoperability); and using the devices outside of their intended environments (fit-for-purpose). The paper outlines three case studies where wearable devices were used, and discusses how these challenges arose.
