What is it about?

In this paper, we describe the creation and implementation of a hands-on workshop to educate the general public about new smart-home security and privacy risks. Our workshop materials are linked in the paper and made available for free to anybody who would like to conduct a similar workshop in their community.

Why is it important?

In 2022, 14.2% of households worldwide had some sort of smart-home functionality, a number expected to grow to 28.8% (or over 672 million households) by 2027. Coinciding with this growth of smart-home device usage, is the emergence of new security and privacy risks impacting smart-home devices and data. While news articles report on security and privacy issues in corporate settings, it is unclear if the public fully comprehends the security impacts to themselves. Our goal was to make consumers aware of the specific threats they could encounter and to provide actionable defenses against them.

Perspectives

This is an easy-to-read publication that walks the reader through how we designed this public workshop, the implementation of the workshop, and our analysis of the results from this workshop. We were able to engage the workshop attendees in one pre- and two post- surveys, to gain an in-depth understanding of the impact of this workshop on their understanding of smart-home security and privacy and methods to bolster the security and privacy in their own home. This workshop traverses both technical and social topics that impact security and privacy.
