What is it about?

We examined people’s beliefs about the effectiveness of common strategies used on social media in response to interdependent privacy violations, where one user violates the privacy of another. Users expressed greatest trust, familiarity, and preference for user-level strategies, compared to those controlled primarily by corporation or government.

Why is it important?

Our findings highlight the importance of content moderation transparency, familiarity, and user control as a means of increasing consumer confidence in privacy on social media.

Perspectives

Despite users being the source of interdependent privacy (IDP) violations on social media, social-media users assign themselves primary responsibility for IDP preservation. This research suggests the need for more IDP education and user interface tools, in order to promote more responsible social media sharing by social media users.
