What is it about?

Citizen science describes projects that engage the public in scientific research. In this paper, we assess the value orientations of volunteers who contribute to Zooniverse - an online platform that connects the public and researchers who collaborate on scientific research.

Why is it important?

Long-term contributors are critical to the success of citizen science projects. Research about motivational drivers has attracted the attention of many scholars, but it is hard to generalize their findings since each study is based on a single or a few citizen science projects. Therefore, this research seeks to understand the primary values of large-scale online citizen scientists who contribute to various types of citizen science initiatives organized by Zooniverse.

Perspectives

We hope this article helps citizen science project owners and platform designers have a better understanding of citizen scientists' motivation and design inclusive citizen science projects and platforms that can motivate people with diverse backgrounds.
