What is it about?
EmpatheticDialogues is a dataset of conversations for different situations and the emotions they elicit. This paper provides a critical analysis of that dataset with the hope of improving how empathy is seen in dialogue systems research and AI systems in general.

Why is it important?
Fundamentally, empathy is a human concept. Having artificial intelligence be able to understand and replicate empathetic behaviour is interesting research, and demands a critical evaluation.
Perspectives
The dataset is a step in the right direction, because artificial intelligence agents which can understand the user's emotions are useful as they lend insight into what people want or desire from the AI in their life. I am excited to see more data and models be critically analyzed for how they portray human factors.
