What is it about?

Early impairments in social attention prevent children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from acquiring social information and disrupt their social behavior development. This paper presents a novel interactive system, Co-Space, tangible system that enables children with ASD aged 4-8 to develop social attention and social behaviors through embodied play in the classroom.

Why is it important?

In our work, we design a new tangible interactive system which leverage the strengths of children with ASD and provide affordances to encourage (but not force) their social attention and behavioral development through embodied play. Also, we propose the possibility of employing the tangible system in a classroom setting and demonstrate specific ways to accommodate different scaled groups of children.

Perspectives

I hope this article will make people in the IDC community and beyond aware of the existing distress of children on the autism spectrum and that we as HCI researchers have the ability to help them get out of it through design.
