What is it about?

Online platforms are not always fair, especially when they are developed in countries of the Global North, primarily designed to meet the life conditions and needs of people in highly developed industrialized nations. The potentially harmful effects of online platforms (such as discrimination, exclusion, violence, among others) particularly affect people in the majority world – the so-called Global South(s). To tackle these injustices, we need a global research agenda that focuses on the experiences and knowledges of the majority world.

Why is it important?

People in the Majority World are underrepresented in discussions about the technological future, even though they are particularly affected by the harmful effects of technological developments such as AI or algorithm-based decision making. To achieve fair technology design and usage, we need to fight structural injustices and to ensure visibility, access, and participation for all.
