What is it about?

Previous attempts to predict COVID-19 patient numbers were not focused on the needs of healthcare organizations. This paper examines a case study of COVID-19 case number prediction completed in partnership with healthcare administration to explore the benefits of a human-centered approach.

Why is it important?

By utilizing a human-centered approach, COVID-19 case numbers were more accurately modeled, allowing healthcare administration to make decisions concerning staff and resource allocation more accurately and prepare for each wave. The frequent collaboration with healthcare administration allowed trust to be built in the model, which also satisfied the technical requirements.

Perspectives

This article hopes to prompt thought into how a human-centered lens can be applied to other data science work, such as statistical modeling, machine learning, and other AI applications. This is a great foundation of human-centered data science, as well as the lenses of human-centered algorithm design, and allows researchers to explore how it can apply to their work.
