What is it about?
We interviewed 25 mental health therapists based in the U.S. working for online teletherapy platforms. We show how the devaluation of mental health work - which is overwhemingly done by women - helps to explain why some therapists engage in online gig work. We also explore how online platforms devalue mental health work in new ways.

Why is it important?
As online therapy becomes increasingly common, it is important that we understand this not as a simple technical solution for the problems that both therapists and their clients face. This article highlights the importance of addressing the devaluation of mental health and therapy work as a "root problem" that digital platforms are continuing to perpetuate.
