What is it about?

We studied how different types of animations, like fading in or scrolling, can affect distractions when you receive notifications on Augmented Reality (AR) smart glasses. We found that a gradual "fade-in" animation is less distracting than other methods.

Why is it important?

With the rise of mobile technology, especially AR smart glasses, people are getting more and more notifications, which can distract them from what they're doing. Finding ways to minimize these distractions, especially when immediate attention to a notification isn't necessary, can improve the user experience and reduce interruptions.

Perspectives

We believe that although animations have been used to reduce distractions on desktops, their effect on AR glasses hasn't been deeply studied. After our research, we understand that the fade-in animation, where a notification gradually appears, is particularly effective in reducing interruptions. We also found that the ideal time for this fade-in is between two to four seconds. It's not just about finding the least distracting animation, but also about understanding the factors, like the duration of the fade-in, that make it so. By sharing our findings, we hope to enhance the notification experience on AR glasses and help users stay focused on their primary tasks.
