What is it about?
This paper describes the authors' recent experience with one aspect of a common qualitative research method. Grounded theory analysis (the common method) involves theoretical sampling (a component of that method). Theoretical sampling means data collection plans are adjusted based on the data that has already been collected. The authors describe how theoretical sampling is done. This approach is useful because rather than more rigid approaches, it allows you to adapt to challenges as they arise.

Why is it important?
It can be difficult to find information about how grounded theory analysis and theoretical sampling are done in practice. This paper provides explanation and shows that this qualitative approach is compatible with preregistration, an open science practice meant to increase research integrity.
