What is it about?

This paper discusses topical humor on social media. Topical humor appears in response to a significant event, such as a seasonal festival such as Christmas, or election, or pandemic. We provide a dataset of topical humor hand-annotated with various labels including the type and the target of humor.

Flagging bad humor is important to create a safe, inclusive, and positive digital space. Existing LLMs such as RoBERTa and GPT-3 have a crude understanding of bad humor based on profanities and rude language however, bad humor is relatively subtle and deceptive.

Perspectives

While annotating dataset, we discovered masked hate speech in the garb of humor attacking various groups on social media. Existing LLMs such as RoBERTa and GPT-3 have a crude understanding of bad humor which is based on profanities and rude language. This dataset can be thus useful to study microaggression and masked hate speech along with the evolution of humor and incongruity during COVID-19.
