Why is it important?

Traditionally assistive and accessible technologies are largely seen as tools that can be used to "bridge a gap" but this promotes a negative view of disability. Disabled people develop an impressive ammount of skills as a result of their life experiences. Shifting our focus towards better leveraging these unique skills could help create novel and more empowering technologies.

Perspectives

Art helps us to capture the uniqueness of individuals, focusing on what only they can do, rather than pushing ableist ideas of a minimum threshold of capabilities. Better engagement between disabled artistis and assistive technology researchers could help to unearth novel groundbraking design directions
