Windowed terminal emulators (which emulate the video display terminals that replaced the original teletypewriters) have evolved into a general support environment for text-based programs. We suspect that windowed terminal emulators are powerful enough to serve as the foundation for a new type of distributed and language-agnostic development environment for Unix and Unix-like systems.
