What is it about?

Engineers and Designers at the European Space Agency are using virtual reality to explore how astronauts interact with various prototypes of future space technologies. Our paper documents this process and focuses on a particular case study where virtual reality simulations helped identify key usability and safety issues during the development of a lunar lander.

Why is it important?

Humanity is set to return to the Moon. Space agencies around the world are working on plans to establish permanently inhabited lunar settlements in the near future. This endeavor introduces a host of new technical challenges. We show that virtual reality is exceptionally well positioned to help tackle some of these challenges.

Perspectives

Working on this project has been a blast, as it allowed us to take virtual reality - a technology normally associated with games and entertainment - and use it to solve challenges of a truly global significance.
