What is it about?

Women and other groups are significantly underrepresented in computing. This poster presents initial results of a survey of 288 undergraduate students to ascertain preferences for computing domains. The poster provides some evidence that computing domains with aspects of "doing good" appeal to underrepresented groups, including women.

Why is it important?

Survey participants were asked to choose the top three applications they would prefer to develop out of a list of 20. Two of the top five choice of application area for women were related to computing for social good whereas none of the top choices for men were. A comparison of the topics between males and females shows that females preferred topics with positive social impact significantly more than males (p = 0. 00000030).

Perspectives

This is an initial work. We are in the process of refining the survey and hope to distribute to a wider audience.
