What is it about?

PowerShare is a mobile application that enables people to become energy prosumers and interact with future energy systems where they are invited to cooperate and provide ancillary services through technologies such as blockchain and gamification. Future energy systems that reduce our carbon footprint will foster complex cooperation between energy consumers, prosumers and producers. This paper reports on an initial study on how these mechanisms are adopted by consumers and prosumers.

Why is it important?

Our future depends on making future energy systems and our overall carbon footprint more sustainable. This requires that we have new distributed systems that enable people to act as responsible consumers and prosumers of renewable energy. PowerShare is a mobile application acting as an interface for a future energy system where a distribution network with an automatic energy management mechanism by encouraging end-users to adapt their supply and demand in order to bolster the grid.

Perspectives

This work evolved from an EU funded research project and is still evolving as a research platform and hopefully in the near future a commercial innovation. Different researchers evolved the platform to explore how HCI mechanisms foster behaviour change including Collective Efficacy, Norm Activation Model, and Gamification.
