What is it about?

Conversational User Interfaces (CUI) have become popularised through the use of smart devices, however their use is heavily contingent upon user trust. We investigate the use of a CUI within the sensitive context of a tenancy to understand how trust manifests and how it might be enhanced through the use of technology.

Why is it important?

We infer from our preliminary findings that trust can be enhanced in sensitive contexts through CUI design that prioritises greater transparency of actions, enhanced control and clearer privacy settings.

Perspectives

As my first publication within the HCI field, co-writing this paper was a tremendously rewarding experience. Ultimately, I hope that further exploration into the use of CUI technology in sensitive contexts and domains considers the importance of understanding underlying power dynamics, designing for transparency and empowering stakeholders who may otherwise be underrepresented.
