What is it about?

We have shown for the first time that human kinetic energy has secret patterns that can be exploited to generate data security keys for wearable devices. Real human trials demonstrate that it is not only more power-efficient to generate keys for wearable devices this way, but these keys are harder to mimic.

Why is it important?

We derive methods that can generate strong security keys for wearable devices from the time-series of kinetic energy harvested by these devices. This is timely as advances in kinetic energy harvesting are enabling wearable devices to go battery-less and power themselves through kinetic energy harvesting. The proposed method is unique in that it uses the kinetic energy harvester not only as a power source for the device, but also a power-free sensor compared to conventional power-consuming motion sensors.

Perspectives

Working on this article was highly motivating for me because I believe that exploitation of micro-scale renewable energy is a relatively unexplored area of research. The fact that human kinetic energy has secret patterns worthy of using in data protection is fascinating new discovery for me. I feel like there are many more new applications of this secret pattern that are just waiting to be discovered.
