What is it about?

This paper tracks the changes in the number and type of ABET accredited computing programs including: Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, Information Technology, and Software Engineering. It also shows the percent of each program that comes from a Research 1, Research 2, or Other university, according to the Carnegie Classification system.

Why is it important?

The analysis helps understand how new computing fields such as Information Technology and Software Engineering compare to longer-established computing fields such as Computer Engineering and Computer Science. For example, it shows that Information Technology includes a large percentage of ABET-accredited programs in Research 1 and Research 2 institutions.

Perspectives

I find it fascinating that Computer Engineering was largely created by R1 institutions, whereas newer computing disciplines are being primarily formed from Other and R2 institutions. While this historical analysis doesn't predict the future, it suggests that some disciplines such as Information Technology, have been accepted in all types of universities.
