What is it about?

This paper presents findings of how a gamified food literacy app (Pirate Bri’s Grocery Adventure) improved participant’s healthy eating behaviours. Pirate Bri's Grocery Adventure (PBGA) tested the effectiveness of using game elements to teach players about food literacy while they’re grocery shopping. We found that participants who used the app over a 3-week period made more nutritious food purchasing decisions and curbed unhealthy impulse buys than the non-game app control.

Why is it important?

Our work is the first to use gameful design and situated learning to develop the Food Literacy skills of planning and selecting foods when grocery shopping. We took this approach with the goal of moving beyond counting calories and short-term weight loss, and to place an emphasis on developing long-term Food Literacy skills.

Perspectives

I expect our work to inspire other researchers to extend and explore gameful design and situated approaches to help consumers make more informed food purchases and develop the full range of Food Literacy skills.
