Open Source Software (OSS) development and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) work have established their positions, but do they actually fit together? This paper examines if there is any hope of bringing HCI work into OSS context and if OSS and HCI philosophies can exist in the same project.

Why is it important?
This paper examines the possibility of OSS and HCI philosophies existing in the same OSS project through an empirical examination of two OSS projects into which usability activities were introduced. The results show that in these two cases the usability specialists embraced aspects of both OSS and HCI philosophies; hence, these philosophies co-existed.
