What is it about?

Computer science graduates are required to navigate ethics of AI in practice. We designed a workshop to help postgraduates critically reflect on what "responsibility" in AI means and how it could impact their work. Our workshop consisted of interactive collaborative activities - discussions and hands-on practical tasks - to support them in translating ethical principles into intentional design choices. This paper offers a blueprint for those who would like to facilitate and reuse our workshop materials in their contexts.

Why is it important?

We present a workshop that sees “responsible” AI as a team design challenge influenced by organizational and resource limits. The activity supports thinking across different fields, encourages turning ethical ideals into design choices, and helps students understand social and technical compromises throughout the AI development process.

Perspectives

This work will hopefully challenge and incentivize more interventions that expose our mental models on "responsibility" in AI, which we so often take for granted. I hope the simple workshop methodology can inspire others to move beyond conceptual, abstract discussions about AI ethics towards more scenario-based, agile, hands-on activities that help confront our opinions in a team setting.
