What is it about?

Electricity is traded on the wholesale market, and energy storage can buy electricity at low prices (charge) and sell electricity at high prices (discharge). However, optimal arbitrage strategies are incredibly complex due to the involvement of many variables and engineering layers. We develop a unified framework and explore different optimization techniques as well as differences due to various variables.

Why is it important?

Energy storage is becoming an important asset in grid systems as electricity demand continues to grow. The high price reflects periods of supply scarcity. Hence, an optimal strategy not only increases storage returns but also supports the grid system under stress conditions.

Perspectives

This article includes both experimental and engineering aspects, making it unique. Working on this led looking at the challenge of arbitrage from multiple perspectives: storage parameters, optimizers, forecasting strategies. As the energy systems grow, storage arbitrage is becoming a complex challenge, and we hope that our work provides practical insights.
