What is it about?

Mobile apps are often assumed to work the same way for everyone around the world. In this study, we found that this is not always the case. By analyzing thousands of Android apps from different countries, we discovered that apps that look identical and belong to the same brand can actually differ in important ways depending on where they are downloaded. These differences can include the permissions they request, the third-party services they use, the code they contain, and even the privacy information they provide to users.

Why is it important?

These results have important implications for privacy, security, fairness, and app regulation. They suggest that a user’s location can influence the version of an app they receive, potentially affecting both their privacy protections and digital experience. They also highlight a previously overlooked source of bias in mobile app research, where conclusions may depend on the country from which apps are collected and analyzed.

Perspectives

One of the most interesting outcomes was the discovery of GeoTwins (apps that appear to be identical but are released under different names in different countries). Looking deeper into these apps revealed subtle differences in permissions, code, third-party services, and privacy disclosures that most users would never notice.
