How do chatbots treat transgender identity? In this study, we examine how two popular large language models - GPT and Llama - respond to questions about transgender and non-binary people. We find that chatbots generally treat trans identity respectfully. However, sometimes they parrot transphobic social media users. More commonly, instances of transphobia are subtle.
