What is it about?
BGP zombies, or stuck routes, have existed for years. Despite major advances in hardware, software, and operational expertise, our work shows that these bugs have not disappeared. Using a new approach, we find that BGP zombies are still widespread, can persist for months, and can even reappear on the same router after being removed.

Why is it important?
This work highlights a long-standing challenge faced by network operators, one that can potentially impact real-world traffic and cause connectivity problems.
Perspectives
The goal of this article is to motivate the community to revisit well-known issues and actively work toward their resolution. By strengthening collaboration between academia and network operators, we can reduce their impact and finally put a long-standing challenge to rest.
