What is it about?
We investigated how people assess robots’ creativity when producing art. When showing not just the final artwork but also how a robot drew it, and moreover, revealing the robot itself, we found that viewers rated the art as more creative. Essentially, seeing AI’s act of creation, and the “artist” behind, both can boost our sense of machine creativity.

Why is it important?
AI tools are rapidly entering fields such as art and design, yet we know little about how people decide if AI is “creative.” Our study is the first to study the effect of revealing more about the process and producer, in addition to the product of creation alone, in a clean and separate manner. By finding out how revealing more of the creative act affects our perceptions, these findings can guide designers, researchers, and educators in better integrating creative AI systems that people could accept into society.
Perspectives
Conducting this research has been a great reminder of the importance of interdisciplinary work. While it is easy to think of building AI as purely a technological challenge, this research highlights the importance of our own expectations and biases in shaping our perceptions of such systems. It is important to remember that designing AI is not just about making it work, but also how it is presented and shared to benefit as many people as possible.
