What is it about?

We extend an existing analysis of public household water datasets, meant to increase research activities, and reconfirm identified tends, such as an increase of overall datasets and an increased share of open access datasets. Surprisingly, we find that none of the recent datasets, although being open access, see any reuse by external research groups. We offer potential reasons to consider for future research groups intending to publish their research data.

Why is it important?

Collecting data about water consumption is a tedious undertaking, requiring a lot of effort in the setup and a long measurement period with robust sensors to create data suitable for machine learning algorithms. Since the current datasets are not being reused, parts of the reason why they have been published have not been accomplished. Hence, the effort that went into creating and publishing the data does not pay off as much as it could. To help researchers gain more from their work and foster the research area overall, we share insights gained from trawling through the accessible data.

Perspectives

Knowing from our own sensor setups how much effort is required to create a functional sensing system, including data formatting, back-up and networking, I would love to see data that has gone through all the required work actually being useful to the research community. Hopefully, we can remind future researchers with our insights of some basic principles and commodities that can vastly increase their impact on the research area overall.
