Why is it important?

Depression can give rise to a wide variety of negative health results. Nevertheless, evidence supporting the relationship between depression and metabolic syndrome (MetS), a series of cardiometabolic risk factors, remains insufficient.

Perspectives

More research is needed to understand the function of MetS in the pathogenesis of depression given the elevated incidence of depression and MetS. And future larger longitudinal studies will be needed to explore the cause-and-effect relation between MetS and depression because of the limitation of cross-sectional study design.
