What is it about?

We followed 81 student Chartered Accountants as they used an assessment dashboard showing data visualisations and automated personalized feedback on mock exams as they prepared for their final qualifying exam. We identified high usage and a 'take what you need' approach focused on understanding and acting on performance weaknesses.

Why is it important?

Making complex data simple and easily understood is key for learning dashboard design. This research considered a variety of dashboard outputs and findings show that choice for the learner and action based feedback are important features of dashboard design. It is also imperative these elements work over a multitude of time points and levels of success.

Perspectives

The research is inspired by my work supporting student chartered accountants through the most important - and difficult - exam of their career. For over 20 years I helped learners answer the question I heard so often: "Why did I fail my mock exam?" The answer was always in the data, and my mission was to present it so learners can understand and use it. I hope this research helps other educators to do the same.
