What is it about?

Fastcrypto is a cryptographic software library which has been benchmarked rigorously during the development process. The paper describes how benchmarks has been integrated into the development and build process, and gives some example of what kind of insights, this has led to.

Why is it important?

The integration of rigorous benchmarking has first and foremost enabled the development of record fast algorithms, but it has also qualified decision making and resource allocation and, since the results are published online, given a valuable point-of-reference for the community.

Perspectives

I think that papers like this, which shares experiences and not only results, should be much more common. It benefits everybody when such experiences are shared and I have found it has led to many interesting discussions and given me some very valuable feedback, that I can use directly in my future work.
