What is it about?

Wheelchair skills are the technical skills utilised by wheelchair users to effectively navigate the environments they encounter on a daily basis, enabling them to live a more independent and fulfilled life. It is essential to have confidence using a wheelchair in order to navigate an inaccessible world. This study explored how training could be delivered remotely.

Why is it important?

Currently there is no systemic peer led training offered to wheelchair users when they receive wheelchairs to give them the necessary skills needed to use the wheelchair. This can lead to isolation and mental/physical health issues. While in-person wheelchair skills training is preferable, this immersive training offers an opportunity to reach a dispersed population.

Perspectives

As a full-time wheelchair user of 18 years, wheelchair skills have enabled me to live as I choose to both personally and professionally in building a career and travelling the world.
