What is it about?
In this study we interview 12 people involved in creating conversational AI, which is any AI-powered technology that users can interact with by having a conversation. Through these interviews we find out different challenges these people face in their work. We compare these challenges to existing academic papers and works to see where there are gaps between research and practice.

Why is it important?
Conversational AI is being used more and more, and is becoming more powerful (like ChatGPT for example). Research and academia is coming up with very valuable tools, knowledge, recommendations, and so on, but unless people in the industry are able to practically use these, they will not have a meaningful wide-scale impact. By exploring where the gaps between research and practice exist, we can begin working on bridging these gaps.
