What is it about?

We wanted to understand how important correct visual 'focus cues', such as defocus blur and chromatic aberration, are to achieving perceptual realism in which presented digital content is indistinguishable from what the eye sees when it observer the real world.

Why is it important?

With the growing commercial interest in topic such as virtual/augmented reality and the meta verse, achieving perceptual realism has taken on a greater importance in the minds of many. However, building displays to present perceptually realistic content is no easy task and involves comprises in a number of areas such as resolution, dynamic range, size, weight and energy consumption. We want to know what the minimum viable display capabilities are for achieving perceptual realism and this study is an important step towards understanding that.
