What is it about?

This proposed study will examine the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the population-level behavioural changes in the US using Zero-effort technology, NextGen IoT data sources (Donate your Data (DYD) from a smart thermostat company named ecobee), and cloud-based analytical infrastructure (Microsoft Azure).

Why is it important?

The proposed study will a) evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household occupancy patterns and variations in the US; b) compute the sleep parameters (sleep time, wake-up time, and sleep duration) and time spent in-house and out-of-the-house to explore the impact of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on household behaviours in the US.

Perspectives

Therefore, this would be one of the first studies in the United States to use zero-effort technology to monitor population-level behavioural changes during the COVID-19 epidemic. The study would be unique due to a) innovative use of datasets from smart home thermostats; b) a novel knowledge translation; c) non-invasive monitoring with no disturbance to daily living routines; d) cost-saving solutions since many of these devices are already installed in thousands of homes across America and do not require subscriptions like many wearables, and e) objective method to build health indicators and real-time dashboards.
