What is it about?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is part of our daily lives, however, societal biases can creep into AI based on race or sex. Digital ageism is the phenomenon of when age-related bias influences the technological processes of conceptualizing, designing, building, and deploying technology. This conceptual paper talks about some of the ways age-related bias can impact these processes.

Perspectives

This work is important because while there is increased attention paid to algorithmic biases that are related to race or sex, there has been little focus on age-based biases and how these may impact AI, and aging in society as a whole. The call to action from this paper is for all stakeholders in technology to self-reflect on their own biases, the biases, and exclusion that are part of the processes, and the taken-for-granted assumptions we bring to the table about aging.
