What is it about?

In this paper, we observed 10 children creating music and tried to predict points where they were engaged from the different things they clicked on. The children made music with Codetta, which lets people create music by joining together puzzle-shaped blocks. We found that pressing play frequently, or avoiding wasting time connecting together blocks might be good predictors for points of engagement.

Why is it important?

Our paper is important because it suggests a method for finding points of engagement during interaction (in our case, whilst children are composing music), which might inform the design of adaptive systems. E.g. is it is detected that a child hasn't pressed play for a long time the interface could automatically encourage playback, better supporting engagement.

Perspectives

I think this paper is a good exploratory first step in understanding engaging people in musical adaptive systems.
